Council Concern Over Insulation Claims

Hastings Borough Council is concerned that a company operating locally is apparently claiming to work on behalf of the Council.

A council spokesman said:

"We have received several queries from local residents about JK Surveys,a company offering grants for insulation.
"While we are obviously keen to see better insulation in more homes, we do want homeowners to realise that JK Surveys are an entirely private company. They are not working on behalf of Hastings Borough Council, nor do we in any way endorse their services.
"In fact we are seeking advice from the Advertising Standards Authority, and Trading Standards, on the methods adopted by this company, because of the concerns that have been raised with us."

Women celebrated at St Mary in the Castle

International Women's Day will be marked by a special event at St Mary in the Castle.

Hastings Mayor, Cllr Maureen Charlesworth, will open the event on Saturday, March 8 alongside chairman of the Hastings Intercultural Organisation, Owen Thompson.

Presentations taking place throughout the day include a look at the changing role of women's legal positions over the last 100 years. There will also be a children's fashion show and a range of community performances from Gizmo, Respond, the Hastings Bengali Forum, Russian playgroup, Siddartha Nepalese Society and the Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS).

There will be a number of information stalls from a range of agencies which support women.

The event takes place between 11am and 5pm

Recycling - the headlines

Latest figures have shown a huge rise in recycling across Hastings.

Four months after the launch of the Twin Bin scheme and Hastings residents have made a massive dent in the amount of waste going to landfill sites.

While recycling shot up from 18% to 26% in a matter of weeks, the amount of rubbish going to landfill decreased by more than 250 tonnes every month, a reduction of around 15%.

The introduction of the bins has also meant fewer bags left out for animals to rip open.  This too is reflected in the quarterly update with an independent consultancy awarding Hastings Borough Council its best ever score for street cleanliness.

Councillor Roy Tucker, lead member for the Environment, said:

"Well done and thank you to everyone who has taken up the Twin Bin challenge.  The Government set us challenging recycling targets but we are getting there and this is all thanks to residents seeing the bigger picture and recycling more and more.
"I know there have been difficult issues.  Hastings and St Leonards is a diverse town and no two roads are exactly alike.  We have tried our best to find solutions for problems when they have arisen and we will continue to work closely with residents to meet their requirements.
"The headlines speak for themselves and I'm also glad to note that we haven't experienced any increase in fly-tipping either.  I appreciate that Twin Bins did mean a major change in the way we think and deal with our rubbish, but I'm very pleased to see that it has made such a big difference."

Another day of discovery at the Museum

Wild and wonderful weather will inspire families at Hastings Museum this weekend.

This Saturday, 1 March, families will work with talented Hastings artist, Angie Biltcliffe, on a number of art and craft activities inspired or powered by the weather.  This is part of the 'Discover...' programme at Hastings Museum. which sees families working with artists each month to explore a different creative theme.

The sessions are run on a drop-in basis between 1.30pm and 3.30pm.  There is a suggested £1 contribution for materials and no need to book.

February's Chinese New Year event saw more than 50 families make dragon masks, try calligraphy and learn more about their animal signs.  To keep up to date with events at the Museum, e-mail museum@hastings.gov.uk with your contact details.
