Council tackles messy neighbourhoods

Hastings Borough Council has kick-started a clean up of messy neighbourhoods.

Urban menaces like fly tipping, over-grown vegetation and dog fouling will all be tackled during the three-week clean up, which started this Monday (4th).

The Council's Neighbourhood Renewal Team is responsible for this latest cleaning initiative and hopes to get residents involved too.  Leaflets are being delivered in target areas to encourage residents to report any anti-social behaviour, like fly tipping and littering on the Together Action Line (08000 854500).

A Council spokesperson said: "Our specialist teams will work their way across the town over the next three weeks to tidy the areas up.  When a neighbourhood is messy and littered, residents feel less inclined to take pride in their area and over time the problems tend to get worse.  When we've done clean-ups like this in the past we've found residents see their area in a new light and take a more active approach to keeping it clean".

Wonderful weddings

If Valentine's Day has inspired you to tie the knot, there are two unique venues waiting to host your celebrations.

Hastings Town Hall and Durbar Hall at Hastings Museum are both licensed for weddings and are taking bookings for 2008 now.

The Town Hall's wedding licence is fairly new, although several successful weddings christened the building last year.  The building's gothic design, lush decor and marble columns make it a spectacular backdrop for weddings and civil partnership ceremonies.  The Council Chamber, where services take place, is adorned with the Hastings crest below an arced ceiling and traditional decorations like gold-leaf lists of previous mayors and a stunning fireplace.  The grand staircase provides the perfect photo spot, where the happy couple can pose in front of an impressive stained glass window.

The Durbar Hall's ornately-carved interior makes it an atmospheric and unusual base for your special day.  The hall was built in 1886 for the Indian and Colonial Exhibition and was used for receptions by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII.  There are numerous photo opportunities at the museum, from the exquisite interior of the Durbar Hall to the long stairway and balcony, not to mention the museum's beautiful grounds.

Dedicated staff at each site are on hand to help the couple book their special day, with advice on dates, parking and fees.

Call 01424 451722 for details of Hastings Town Hall or 0845 274 1052 for more information about Durbar Hall.

A leaflet is available from Hastings Information Centre or Hastings Museum and Art Gallery.
