A busy season of exhibitions and events lies ahead for Hastings Museum and Art Gallery.
The first half of 2008 will see classical music, acclaimed artists and children's activities in the museum's gallery space. Among the highlights of the art events is an exhibition of Leigh Walker and Kate Deutsch's work (from 10 February). Walker gained a name as one of Scotland's top contemporary artists for her figurative photo-montage work and local artist, Deutsch, is known for her experimental approach to technique and subject matter. Work by Nick Archer and Charlotte Snook will also be displayed in the gallery in spring.
Besides these exhibiting artists, Opera South East will be performing 'A Night in Vienna' in the museum's stunning Durbar Hall and a series of talks and lectures will explore fascinating pockets of local and national history. Children are welcomed to the museum for a range of activity days. 'Discover...' days allow children to take a creative approach to topics like weather, lanterns, Chinese New Year, working with museum staff and artists. Pre-school children are invited to the museum every Thursday and a free session of lively learning.
A full programme of events is available from Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, please call 0845 274 1052 or visit www.hmag.org.uk
Strong winds and rough seas are washing ashore timber from a sunken ship.
The Greek-registered Ice Prince sunk off the Dorset coast earlier this month and large quantities of debris have appeared along the Sussex coastline.
Hastings Borough Council seafront patrol staff have noticed smaller quantities washed ashore here in Hastings and are warning people to take care on the beach and not to remove timber.
A council spokesman said: "It's actually illegal to remove this timber from the beach as well as dangerous and we have got specialist recovery teams to take it away as and when it washes up. We will be stepping up our seafront patrols and putting up warning signs as well.
"The safety of the public is our first concern and if you spot anyone in trouble on the beach or in the sea you should, of course, contact the Coastguard on the 999 number."
Council officers paid a surprise midnight visit to a pub, after complaints that pub customers were flouting the smoking ban.
It was the first time Hastings Borough Council's licensing team had taken this type of direct action following the ban. They visited The Shah pub in Mount Pleasant Road, Hastings on Saturday night (19) with police officers.
A council spokesman said: "It is important for the public to know that we do treat all complaints seriously and if enquiries support the complaint, then action will be taken. Joint operations, such as this, demonstrate the close co-operation between the local authority and police when it comes to licensing pubs and clubs in Hastings.
"Since the introduction of the smoke free legislation in July there has been a very positive response from the licensed trade. We have noticed though that 'no smoking' stickers have come down in some pubs and the cold weather has meant that some owners aren't perhaps being as tough as they should be on smoking customers. We will always take action on anyone who breaks the law, whether they are a customer or pub owner."
No-one was found to be smoking at The Shah pub, but two people were arrested for public order offences.
The planning process was demystified at a recent workshop in Hastings.
Council planning officers joined forces with an expert from Planning Aid to explain the complicated process step by step. Ten keen participants came along to 'Planning Unpacked 2' to find out about how the planning process works from start to finish, making representation on new LDF documents and making effective comments on planning applications .
A Council spokesman said: "'Planning Unpacked 2' was as successful as the first and gave residents the perfect chance to see the how planning works and how easy it is to get involved. Planning applications and policies can have an effect on many people and so it's important residents know how to comment and make representations that will help us make the right decision.
"We realise how important it is to give residents the right information so they can get involved in our decisions and that's why we'll be hosting more sessions like this in the future".
Planning Aid offers free independent town planning advice to individuals and local organisations that cannot afford to pay a planning consultant and works with communities to make the process clearer and enable them to play a more effective role in the planning of their areas.
