Planning Unpacked 2

Learn the ins and outs of the planning process at a new year workshop.

Spaces are limited for ‘Planning Unpacked 2’, which will take you through the planning system step by step, including how to comment on planning applications and the Council's long-term plan, the Local Development Framework.

Councillor Matthew Lock, lead member for Community Prosperity, said: "We are always looking for new ways to make the Council and its processes more accessible.  Planning issues can affect everybody, but the process can seem complicated if you're new to it, so this workshop is the perfect place to start learning.  Book a place and come along and find out more the planning system."

The workshop will be fast moving, interactive and informative, taking place on Thursday, 17 January 2008 at 2pm and finishing no later than 7pm at Hastings Voluntary Action, Priory Street.

The event has been prepared with Planning Aid, an organisation that offers free, independent and professional town planning advice and support to communities and individuals who cannot afford to pay planning consultancy fees.

There are only 15 places available and must be booked by Thursday, 10 January.  To reserve your space call Samuel Batchelor on 01424 783253.

Ssssh! It's the Big Hush

Usually just the remit of school children, Hastings Borough Council's very own staff are to take part in a sponsored silence next week.

The Big Hush, organised by Sophie Fennessey, data capture assistant, will raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Relief and will see council volunteers staying quiet for a few minutes or several hours during this fund raising day next Friday (25).

While staff battle to stay silent, they'll have the chance to take part in a silent auction or watch a silent movie in the Town Hall Council Chamber.  All the money raised, through the auction and through sponsorship, will go straight to the charity.

Pub owner fined for being a noisy neighbour

A landlady has been fined thousands of pounds, after loud music boomed from her pub.

Dawn O'Brien, 42, from The Fox public house in North Street, St Leonards, appeared before magistrates in Hastings on Tuesday (8), where she admitted breaching a Noise Abatement Notice in July last year.

The court heard that Ms O'Brien had been served the notice in September 2006 after Hastings Borough Council Environmental Health officers received complaints from residents about excess noise.  Officers warned Ms O'Brien to keep it down but in July 2007 the court heard she breached the notice by once again playing loud music.

Magistrates fined Ms O'Brien £3,000 and ordered her to pay the Council's costs of £800. She was also ordered to a pay a victim surcharge of £30.

A spokesman for Hastings Borough Council said: "I very much hope that this will act as a warning to the owners of other licensed premises that they need to think about those people living nearby.  We are determined to take a strong line on this type of noise nuisance and will make sure that licensees take their responsibilities seriously."

Central St Leonards Parking Study- Consultant's Report Issued

Hastings Borough Council has commissioned Colin Buchanan and Partners Ltd (a specialist transport and economic consultancy) to carry out an economic impact assessment of parking supply, demand and management in light of the regeneration taking place in St Leonards town centre, and because of the concerns of local businesses on the impact of the parking changes.

The consultancy has now submitted a draft of their report and we are asking for comments on their findings and suggestions.

A public exhibition of the report's key findings and suggestions will take place from 19 January to 1 February at the Royal Victoria Hotel, Marina, St Leonards, between 10am and 7pm every day.  Representatives from Colin Buchanan will be present at the exhibition between 10am and 2pm on the two Saturdays (19 and 26 January).

Comments can be made at either the public exhibition or via an e-mail addressed to: stleonardsparkingstudy@cbuchanan.co.uk or by post to: St Leonards Parking Consultation, Colin Buchanan, Newcombe House, 45 Notting Hill Gate, London, W11 3PB.  All responses must be submitted in writing by 4 February, 2008.
