Development Control is the process of determining planning applications submitted by individuals and commercial developers. It aims to ensure that development in the Borough is in accordance with the Local Plan and is carried out in the best interests of the general public and the area.

Usually, anyone who wants to build anything or change the use of land or buildings needs planning permission from the Borough Council first. Some development can be carried out without making a planning application - this is called "Permitted Development".
A booklet is available from Planning Services called "Planning - A Householder's Guide", which explains this further. It is important to note that this booklet only relates to single family dwellings and not to flats, shops or other commercial premises. If you live in or own one of these properties and wish to make external alterations or extend your property you will almost certainly require planning permission.

There are also surveyors,planners or architects in private practice who may be able advise and assist you.
