If we continue along the path until it opens out (the old pumping station will be directly ahead) and then turn to our right we can see the entrance to the depot.  On the left side of that entrance is a large Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), so-called because its greenish white flowers resemble a tulip.  They appear in June and are concealed high up in the tree foliage.  Its strangely shaped "squared-off" green leaves are unmistakeable and in autumn they turn a beautiful rich yellow.  The Tulip Tree was introduced from eastern North America in the late seventeenth century and is now common in parks, but it is not a tree for the small garden
