Following the path past the triangle on the left, are two tall Western Red Cedars (Thuja plicata). Western Red Cedar is a native of forests in Canada and the United States. The red in the name comes from the bark, but Thuja species are quite different to Cedrus species. Western Red Cedar belongs to the Cypress family and its scale-like leaves are arranged in flat sprays. The foliage smells strongly. It is widely grown as both a specimen and hedge tree; there are about forty in the Park, and also several Chinese Thuja (Platycladus orientalis). The Western Red Cedar as commonly used as timber for garden sheds, greenhouses and other outdoor buildings because it resists rotting.
