How to avoid getting a Penalty Charge Notice

Get to know the parking restrictions

Check this website for the various parking restrictions, both on street and in our off street car parks and have a look at the maps to see where the residents only zones are.

Paying to park

Ensure you make sufficient payment for the duration of your parking stay.  Always check the digital display on the machine before pressing the red button for the ticket, to make sure all your money has been accepted.  Before leaving your car, look back to check that the ticket details are clearly visible from the outside.  The best position for a ticket is on the dashboard near to the tax disc.  Remove old tickets to avoid confusion.  Try to allow for delays in getting back to your vehicle.

Car Parks

All of our car parks are Pay and Display.  If you do not have any change for the machine, don't risk leaving the car park to go for change.  It's a good idea to keep some spare change in your car for when you need it.  Always park within a marked bay and unless you are a blue badge holder, do not park in the disabled bays, even if the rest of the car park is full.  If you are a blue badge holder, remember that unless you are in a disabled bay and are displaying your badge and clock, you must pay and display before leaving the car park.  Not all local authorities have similar rules for blue badge holders in car parks so always check the tariff boards, which explain the parking rules for the car parks.

Loading and Unloading

If you need to load/unload on yellow lines, look out for kerb markings and time plates which may indicate that there are loading restrictions in place.  If they are, do not risk it, but park elsewhere or return when permitted.  Loading on yellow lines without kerb markings or restrictions is allowed, but activity must be continuous.  If you are not immediately adjacent to the address you are loading to or from, it's a good idea to place a large note in the windscreen indicating where you are and what time you commenced loading.

Assumptions

Don't assume that because you have only left your vehicle unattended for a few minutes, that this makes you exempt from getting a Penalty Charge Notice.  If you park in contravention, even for a short period of time, you may be issued a Penalty Charge Notice.
