Mediation Service

When should I go to mediation?
Where possible the best way to sort out a problem is informally between yourself and your neighbour.  However this is not always possible without outside help.  This is when Mediation can be useful.

What is mediation?
It is a way of helping neighbours to discuss problems and reach a solution acceptable to everyone involved through listening, supporting and guiding each party towards resolving their problems.
Mediation sessions are voluntary, and arrangements reached are not legally binding.  The service is free, confidential, impartial and independent.

What problems can neighbourhood mediation deal with?
Examples of the problems the service deals with are:

  • Noise and Parties
  • Boundary Disputes
  • Children's Behaviour
  • Pets' Behaviour
  • Parking Disputes
  • Harassment or Abusive Behaviour

How does mediation work?

  1. If you have a problem you can approach Environmental Services. who will decide if it is appropriate to refer your case to the Mediation Service, or you can contact the Mediation Service direct by telephone or letter.
  2. The Mediation Service will contact the first party by telephone or letter to arrange a visit to their home by two volunteer Mediators.  With permission we will arrange a subsequent visit to the other party involved.  During both visits we listen, explain about Mediation, and encourage both sides to come to a Mediation Session.
  3. If parties are willing, a Mediation Session, with both parties present, will be arranged at a suitable location, at a time convenient to everyone involved.
  4. The Face-to-Face Meeting: During the session, both parties have a chance to talk without interruption - the Mediators will ensure that any anger is safely contained.  The aim is to find a solution which both parties can accept.  However, a further session can be arranged if desired.  Any areas of agreement are written down and the agreement subsequently signed by everyone (this is not legally binding).
