Introduction
With our partners, we've recently started this housing-led regeneration project in the Central St Leonards area. This is initially a £3.5m funded joint project that will increase the quality and availability of social housing in St Leonards. Initially, the project will focus on seven key streets and also aims to address many of the other social issues facing residents.

Who is involved?
Hastings Borough Council, Local Space, Homes and Communities Agency, AmicusHorizon and other key service providers. Local Space is the key partner, working with Hastings Borough Council to continue the regeneration of the St Leonards area. At this stage a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Local Space and the Council in which subscribes to the Council's vision of 'the renaissance of Hastings St Leonards through social, economic cultural and environmental regeneration'.
Who is Local Space?
Local Space is a housing association established in 2006. Its aim is to provide decent, well managed social housing by purchasing and refurbishing poor condition properties in urban areas. Homes which are acquired through this approach are dispersed throughout settled neighbourhoods rather than being confined to certain areas. They support the Council's sustainable communities' agenda by helping to develop mixed-tenure communities, filling empty homes and contributing to the regeneration of neighbourhoods.
Local Space is committed to a long term presence in the St Leonards area. This will involve a joined up approach, working closely with different service providers in the area including the local community and businesses in order to achieve long lasting improvement in the area.

What does it mean for local people?
The project is committed to providing quality and affordable social accommodation to local people. It will not mean people from outside the Borough move into the area.

What are the other benefits of the project?
St Leonards is a town positively changing. The area has attracted a number of new businesses over the past year, thereby drawing new residents and visitors to the town. The community of St Leonards is also changing. There is also a more organised outlook with a clear focus to build pride and encourage investment. This particular investment project reflects such a process and the local authority is positively responding to this demand for improvements.
Supported by Hastings Borough Council the South St Leonards Area Management Board is also addressing local issues. The Area Management Board has created a plan to co-ordinate actions which responds to residents and local business concerns. This project is just one aspect of the overall regeneration plan for the area. Local Space itself is passionate about encouraging an active and engaged resident community. In the last five years they have appointed two resident Board members and have supported the growth of TARA, the Local Space Tenants and Residents Association. Local Space firmly believes in listening to and being challenged by residents in order to improve its service.
