Pavements

It is our top priority to maintain safe pavements and footways across the town for all pedestrians.

Although pavements may appear untidy and damaged, we concentrate on fixing serious defects that present a safety risk.  Pavement defects are counted as a safety risk if the 'trip' height is more than one inch.  A 'trip' as the name suggests, is the difference in level between adjacent bricks and slabs.  This is reduced to ¾ of an inch in areas that have high pedestrian flow, such as the town centre.

Ideally our pavements would not only be safe, but also of uniform appearance, however budget constraints mean that different materials sometimes have to be used, which can give footways a 'patchwork' look.

The uniform appearance of the footway can also be spoiled by discoloured paving slabs, which are subject to weathering and colour loss.  Every effort is made to find the nearest possible colour-match, however, with safety as top priority, this is not always possible.

Slabs can be damaged in areas where vehicles tend to mount the pavement.  Bollards help to protect the pavement in particular problem areas.
