Infectious Disease

Diseases such as food poisoning, meningitis, legionella, viral hepatitis and typhoid have to be notified to us by the doctor.

For medical advice and information on particular diseases and conditions visit the NHS Direct website web site at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk or telephone 0845 4647.

The Environmental Services Department has a duty to help prevent the spread of infectious disease and this includes:

  • Investigate cases with interviews and questionnaires so that contacts can be traced and steps taken to prevent the spread of disease.
  • Work closely with the Consultant in Communicable Disease Control at the Health Protection Agency on outbreaks and incidents.
  • Contribute to national surveillance schemes co-ordinated by the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre both as part of routine work and project work as part of national research.
  • Liase with other Authorities to provide a consistent and co-ordinated approach to national trends and outbreaks
