This Summer, we ran a series of major roadshows about recycling and the Twin Bin Scheme and thousands of residents turned up to get greener living advice and give us their opinions on the scheme.  We've gathered the quickest and best green living tips together that our roadshow visitors found the most useful!  Keep checking these pages as we'll soon be publishing a major guide to greener living in Hastings!

At Home

It’s important to remember that the energy involved in simply ‘re-using’ something is often far less than that required to throw it away or even recycle it! The Hastings Freecycle Network is a unique service that allows residents to freely exchange objects they no longer want to keep.  Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hastings-freecycle to find out more!

Buy recycled paper, kitchen rolls and toilet tissue!

Buy flowers, fruit and veg that are in season - remember, if it’s out-of-season it’s damaged the environment to get here!

Try to keep your ‘shopping rubbish’ down (the vast majority of our rubbish is just packaging) and try to re-use plastic bags as they take hundreds of years to rot away in landfill.

Over half the heat lost in your home escapes through the walls and roof so it’s costing you money and damaging the environment with greenhouse gases.  Go to our energy efficiency pages for help and advice (including details of any grants you might be entitled to).

If every household in Britain replaced just three normal bulbs with energy saving lightbulbs enough energy could be saved to run all the country's street lighting!

In Your Garden

We’re currently putting the finishing touches to our ‘Garden Waste Club’ which will replace our green waste sacks with membership of an exclusive club and the use of a 240 litre brown wheeled bin for garden waste!

However, you should seriously consider using some form of composter for all your organic waste as they save time, money and, ultimately, the environment!

Alternatively, go to www.greencone.com for details of the incredibly cheap and efficient ‘Green Johanna’ compost bins which offer an ‘all-in-one’ solution for all your green waste needs.  Several residents won these compost bins in our roadshow competitions!

Special Offers for East Sussex Residents

Our partners at East Sussex County Council are offering Hastings residents reduced price kitchen composters at just £25! These small, odourless, clean and convenient devices can take all your food waste and, after a fortnight, produce nutrient-rich compost for your soil!

They’re also offering reduced price wormeries.  For just £30 plus delivery, these clean, safe and odourless self contained units can take all your ‘soft, organic waste’ including food and even dust from your hoover! Again, they provide incredibly rich compost for your soil and, being so small, can be put anywhere from your garage to your shed!

Call the suppliers Blackwell on 0845 130 60 90 or go to East Sussex County Council's composting web pages for more information.
