Frequently asked questions
How much is a Bulky Waste Collection?
For up to three items the cost is £16 (from 01 April 2012).
How do I make a bulky waste booking?
Telephone 01424 451077 or visit Hastings Information Centre. Payment must be taken at the time of making a booking via credit or debit card (we can't accept AMEX or Diners) over the telephone or by card, cash or cheque.
What items do you collect?
The collection service is for items such as white goods, furniture, mattresses and televisions.
Is a bed base and mattress classed as one item?
No. The bed base and mattress will be classed as two separate items. A divan bed base in two pieces is however, classed as one item.
I only have one item; is the cost the same?
Yes. The cost for up to three items is still £16. It may be worthwhile to wait until you have three items or ask a neighbour if they want to share a booking (all the items will need to be collected from one address).
Can you collect anything?
No, unfortunately we cannot collect normal domestic refuse, garden waste, rubble, ceramic tiles, gas cylinders and very heavy items, such as pianos. If you are unsure please contact us.
What days do you collect?
We collect every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday excluding public holidays.
How far in advance can I make a booking?
We can take bookings up to two weeks in advance.
Where will the items be collected from?
Items will need to be placed out the front of your property by 7am. Access will need to be clear and the items accessible. If the items are not in the specified location or not out by the time the crew arrives you will lose the collection and will need to pay for another booking.
What if I cannot get my items out?
Unfortunately we are unable to collect any items from inside your property.
My washing machine is still plumbed in - can it be disconnected it for me?
No. All items will need to be disconnected and empty prior to collection.
My fridge/freezer still contains food - is this ok?
No. Fridges and freezers will need to be fully defrosted and empty of all food. Any items that are not empty will not be collected and you will need to make another booking at a further cost of £16.
Can I change the items to be collected?
We will need to be advised of any change to a booking before 3pm the day before the collection. The crews will only take the items specified on their collection list.
How much notice do I need to give to cancel a booking?
You will need to advise us before 3pm on the day before the collection is due to receive a refund. Any changes made after this time may result in the booking being lost and no refund given.
I am a landlord/ business - can I use this service?
Unfortunately not, the bulky waste collection service is a subsidised service for residents only. We are unable to collect from businesses or landlords as this is classed as trade waste. We suggest hiring a private contractor to responsibly dispose of your waste. You can find these services in the Yellow Pages or on the internet.
I am an OAP/receive benefits - can I get a discount?
Unfortunately, there are no discounts available on this scheme. The cost is the same for all bookings.
What happens if items disappear from outside my house before the collection?
Please contact us before 3pm the day before the collection to change or cancel any bookings. If we are not informed a refund cannot be issued.
What happens to my items?
We try to recycle as much as possible and this includes items such as cookers and fridges. Items that cannot be recycled will go to landfill or incineration.
Some of my items are still in good repair and in working order - can they be reused?
If items are still in good repair, and in working order, we would encourage residents to contact Hastings Furniture Service who provide a free collection service for unwanted furniture and appliances for re-use.
