Heat for Every Home

Snow covered roof tops

We're all aware of the threat posed by climate change and global warming.  Increasing levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere mean that more heat is being trapped and the planet's temperature is rising.  Energy consumption in the home is a major source of greenhouse gases.

Use the links below to find out how we can lower greenhouse gas levels by making your home more 'energy efficient'.

Have You Got Money to Burn?

Where does your heat go examples

  • 35% of the heat you pay for can be lost through your walls
  • 25% of the heat you pay for can be lost through your roof
  • 20% of the heat you pay for can be lost through draughty ill-fitting doors and windows
  • 15% of the heat you pay for can be lost through your floor
  • 10% of the heat you pay for can be lost through your windows.

There are a number of ways in which we can help your home stay warm for longer and lower your fuel bills (and also reduce your C02 emissions):

  • Loft Insulation
  • Draught-proofing of doors and windows
  • Insulation in external cavity walls
  • A jacket for your hot water tank
  • Central Heating
  • Heating controls
  • Low-energy light bulbs
  • Energy-efficient fridges

By taking some of these measures you can save up to £200 a year on your fuel bills, stay warmer for longer and help save the planet by reducing your CO2 emissions (which are partly to blame for global warming).

Insulation is by far the most effective way of achieving this as it reduces the rate at which heat escapes and means less money is needed to keep the house or flat warm.  Try to insulate your walls and lofts and keep doors and windows closed to stop heat from escaping.

Grants and Discount Schemes

People in cold, damp homes are more likely to suffer from:

  • Respiratory illness
  • Cardio-vascular difficulties
  • Asthma
  • Circulatory complications
  • Arthritis and rheumatism

Nearly 55,000 people die each winter because they can't afford to heat their homes properly.  Do you find yourself turning the heating down or off during the Winter to save money?   Does this sound like someone you know?
These are some the ways in which we can help:

Energy Tips

No Cost Tips

  • Don't waste heat by keeping windows open when heating is on.
  • Set your hot water thermostat to 55-60 degrees celsius.
  • Showers use less hot water than baths.
  • Close all curtains at dusk to keep heat in.
  • Keep internal doors closed to reduce draughts.
  • Turn off lights and appliances not in use.
  • Choose the right size pan for the food you're cooking and for the cooker hob. Keep the lid on.
  • Wash full loads in your washing machine.
  • Defrost your fridge regularly.
  • Don't leave your TV and Computer on standby.

Low Cost Tips

(You may be eligible for a grant for some of these)

  • Make sure your hot water cylinder is well insulated.
  • Insulate hot water pipes.
  • Use low wattage energy saving bulbs.
  • Fix brush seals to exterior doors and letterboxes.
  • Fix shelves above radiators to direct warm air into the room.
  • Put aluminium foil behind radiators.

General Tips for keeping Warm and Healthy

Try to keep a constant temperature of 18-21 degrees celsius (64 - 70 degrees fahrenheit) in all rooms.  If this isn't possible or affordable, keep one room warm but pre-heat the bed and bedroom.

Make sure you have some hot food and drink everyday.

Take a little exercise every day.

Wrap up warmly before going out - no matter how short the trip
