Why You Have to Register

If you want to vote in local and national elections it is important that you make sure you are on the Register now.

By law you must include your name on the Register even if you do not intend to vote.

Registering to Vote

Applications are suspended between August and December while an annual audit (canvass) takes place.  Every household receives a voter registration form in late August and can amend any details of their households at that time.  A new register of electors is then published on 01 December (see Publication and Inspection, below).

The Annual Canvass of Electors

The Annual Canvass of Electors takes place between August and December.  All households receive a form at the end of August to list the names of everyone living at their address who is eligible to vote.  If you have not received your form by early September, please contact Electoral Services on 01424 451087.

During this period, the monthly changes to the register (rolling registration) do not take place, as by law this period is allocated for compiling the annual register to be published at the beginning of December.

Full and Edited Versions

The full register has the names and addresses of everyone registered to vote.  Anyone can look at it, but copies can only be supplied for certain purposes, such as elections, law enforcement, and checking applications for credit.  It will be an offence to pass on information from the full register for purposes not allowed by law.

The edited register can be used for any purpose and for example can be bought by any person, company or organisation and used for marketing.  You can choose not to be on this version of the register.

What You Need to Do

If you want to appear on the full register only, you should tick the box at the end of Section A of the form.

If you do not tick this box, your name will also appear on the edited version of the register.

The person who fills in and signs the registration form must ask each person named on the form to indicate their choice, and then put a tick against anyone who wishes their name and address to be excluded from the edited register.

Publication and Inspection

The full and edited registers will be published by 01 December and updated every month.  Rolling registration for monthly changes to the register will then start again as from December, with the first update being published at the beginning of January.  All new electors registering will be asked to choose whether they wish to appear on the edited version of the register, and the rolling register updates will be in full and edited versions.

The full register will be available for inspection at the Town Hall.  The edited register will also be available for inspection at this office.

Reminders

If you do not return your form by the end of September, we will send you a second form as a reminder, if this reminder is not returned you may receive a visit from a personal canvasser with a final reminder.  Please help save your Council money by returning your form as soon as possible and avoiding the need for reminders to be printed and delivered.  You can also register by FREEPHONE, internet or text if there are no changes to any of your details.  Please follow the instructions on the form.  If you have any questions or need help with filling in your form, please contact us.
