Number of signatures required on a petition for a referendum on whether the Borough should have an Elected Mayor

The Borough Council is required, by the Local Government Act 2000, to publish the minimum number of signatures which would be needed to support a valid petition requiring the Council to hold a referendum on whether or not the Borough should have an Elected Mayor.

The minimum number of signatures (equivalent to 5% of the Borough's local government electorate) is 3,182.

The above number will apply to any petition submitted to the Borough Council before 1 April 2010.  However, a new number will be published in February 2010 and if the new number is less than 3182, then the new number will apply from the date it is published.

Information about Elections

Local Elections are held every two years for half of the Council.  County Council Elections are held every four years and European Parliamentary Elections every five years.  These elections are usually held on the first Thursday in May.  The timing of a General election differs, as the date can be selected by the Prime Minister, providing it is within 5 years of the previous election.

More than one election can be held on the same day (in 2004 there was a combined election for Hastings Borough Council and the European Parliament - see Past Elections).

European Parliamentary Election

These Elections are held in electoral regions.  There are twelve electoral regions in the United Kingdom.

Hastings Borough is in the South East Region that covers 67 local authorities.  The South East Region has the largest electorate in the UK and is be represented by 10 MEPs (Members of the European Parliament)

About Voting

The Electoral Commission has just launched a new website www.aboutmyvote.co.uk as part of it's voter awareness campaign leading up to the 10 June 2004 elections.

The site explains how to register to vote, the ways a vote can be exercised and which elections are forthcoming in each area.  If you wish to have a postal vote you can complete and download an application form on this site and return it to us by post.
