Kiosk Consultation: Upper Promenade Eversfield Place
Hastings Borough Council has regular requests from potential business operators for suitable buildings or locations to trade from on the seafront and we are keen to enhance the facilities for residents and visitors to the town.
Large parts of the seafront are within a Conservation Area and we also recognise the heritage value of much of the 1930's concrete promenade and particularly the listed buildings, including a number of seafront shelters.
It is not always appropriate to allow catering vehicles or other more temporary structures to be used for catering or other trading uses and we are currently considering providing one or two kiosks on the upper promenade of Bottle Alley.
We have produced two proposals for kiosk designs that we feel are in keeping with modernist designs that Sidney Little intended for the two tier promenade.
A modular building built using GRP and other modern materials and techniques but that also incorporates an overhung roof slab similar to the cantilevered roof deck of Bottle Alley itself. It is adapted from similar structures that are used by the RNLI in many seafront and beach locations.
This design is based on an original 1930s structure, adapted to be used for catering. It would be built from concrete and is similar in proportion and design to contemporary 1930s buildings.
Potential kiosk locations:
There are many considerations for the locations of the kiosks including proximity to the cycle route, availability of services, maintaining current views, protection from the weather and the existing buildings. We have suggested four potential locations two in the existing bastions (East and West) and two set back closer to the road (East and West):
Send us your views:
We would be keen to hear your view on each of the proposed designs and also on the locations that have been suggested.
