Personal Data - The Council's Responsibilities

Hastings Borough Council takes its responsibilities under Data Protection legislation very seriously.  The Data Protection Act 1998 regulates the collection, storage, processing and disclosure of personal data.  It also gives rights to individuals about whom information is recorded (data subjects).

The Act places obligations on those who record and use personal data (data controllers).  Hastings Borough Council is a data controller.  Data controllers must be open about the purposes for which they intend to use such personal data, and must notify the Information Commissioner of those purposes.  Data Controllers are expected to follow sound and proper practices by complying with the eight Data Protection Principles set out in the Data Protection Act.

Guidance on the Data Protection Act is available from the Information Commissioner's web site at www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk.
