Town Centre Cycling Trial

During April 2006 we undertook consultation via the About magazine and this website to ask your views on a proposal to trial cycling in the town centre.

The closing date has now passed and all of your comments will be collated and reviewed by the Highways Manager, then put to the Portfolioholder for Transport, some time after the local elections.

Below is an outline of the proposal:

Pedestrian areas of the town centre are currently out-of-bounds for cyclists but Hastings Urban Bikes (HUB) have raised a petition to remove this restriction for a 14-month trial period. The petition asked that we consider allowing cyclists to use town centre areas to give them safer access to the shopping area and the station, avoiding busy roads like Albert Road and Harold Place. It would also allow a National Cycle Network route to be signed through the town centre linking with the seafront.

Recent studies carried out by the Department for Transport show that, in general, cyclists tend to slow down and take more care in pedestrian areas, that the majority of pedestrians were not concerned for their safety with cyclists around, and that other things like the layout of an area can affect pedestrian safety and comfort.

We asked you what you thought about the proposal.

  • Should we trial cycling in the town centre?
  • Would you like the current cycle ban to stay?

The proposed trial area includes: Cambridge Road, Castle Street, Robertson Street, Queens Road and Wellington Place.
