The Stade – an Arts Award Welcome Centre

Arts Award is an organisation that supports young people who want to deepen their engagement with the arts, build creative and leadership skills, and achieve a national qualification.

Through Arts Award at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, young people aged 11–25 can explore any of the art forms including performing arts, visual arts, literature, media and multimedia.  The award builds confidence, helps young people to enjoy cultural activities, and prepares them for further education or employment.

The Stade is the perfect setting for this type of study and for centuries has attracted artists drawn by the heritage of the area, the light, the unique buildings and the chance to see Europe's largest beach launched fishing fleet in action.

The Stade is home to a working lifeboat station, the Jerwood Contemporary Art Gallery and community facilities (due for completion 2011), black net shops (grade II* listed by English Heritage), the steepest funicular in the UK, the Fishermen's Museum, The Shipwreck Museum, the Coastguards, access to the Country Park and the shingle beach.  Given this beautiful working environment, there are many opportunities on the Stade for creative work.

Whether it be painting, drawing, film making, dancing, singing, drama or sewing, the Stade can act as inspiration for the creation of work and can also provide interesting venues and spaces for performances and exhibitions.

Beatrice Rapley the Stade Education Officer and Yasmin Ornsby of the Fishermen's Protection Society are trained as Bronze, Silver and Gold Arts Award Advisors.  If you, or a young person you know, is working for their Arts Award and would like to come to the Stade to develop their project, then please do get in touch.  Yasmin and Beatrice can help and support young people in their Arts Award and can offer opportunities for young people to take part in walks, talks, workshops, events and also help to arrange for them to meet fishermen and other people who live and work on the Stade.
