Introduction

The Stade Education Project is a three year Heritage Lottery Funded Project running from December 2008 to December 2011.

The project work is primarily paid for by the Heritage Lottery Fund with some additional support for specific projects from Hastings Borough Council, and (where successful applications have been made) external funders such as Screen South.  The Stade Education Project is guided by a Stade Education Project Steering Group comprised of representatives from Hastings Borough Council, The Fishermen's Museum, The Shipwreck Museum, The Fishermen's Protection Society, the Excellence Cluster and Sea Space.

The three main partners in the Stade Education Project are The Fishermen's Museum, The Shipwreck Museum and The Fishermen's Protection Society.

The aims of the Project

The Project aims to:

  • Increase the number of people enjoying and learning about the cultural and environmental heritage of The Stade
  • Improve, coordinate and promote a range of informational and learning resources
  • Provide more opportunities for local people to understand and appreciate their maritime heritage
  • Develop a continual strategy for educational resources and learning on The Stade

Project activities

The aims of the project will be achieved through a whole series of activities such as:

  • Setting up and running a Stade Volunteer Guides scheme
  • Creating a downloadable Audio Tour of The Stade
  • Working with our three partners on education projects with schools, developing interpretative resources and exhibitions, and creating education resources
  • Creating downloadable resource packs for teachers
  • Providing training for staff from our three partners organisations
  • Facilitating INSET days for teachers to promote The Stade and to show how it can be used as an educational resource
  • Setting up a Digital Screen Archive Project
  • Assisting with curriculum focused field trips to The Stade for school groups
  • Setting up and working with a Stade Education Project Advisory teachers' group
  • Coordinating Dancing with Dabs (previously called Walking The Fish) and organising educational workshops for schools/groups (part funded by Hastings Borough Council)
  • Coordinating talks, workshops and events on or about The Stade

Project Partners

The Fishermen's Museum

The Fishermen's Museum celebrates and documents the Hastings fishing fleet.

As part of the Stade Education Project in 2009 and 2010 the Fishermen's Museum:

  • Put on a special exhibition of unseen exhibits
  • Created a Loan Box on the theme of fishing and training staff to use this with Reminiscence and school groups
  • Produced educational graphics panels for display in the museum and for schools to borrow
  • Improved the musem's technical resources with a new computer and flat screen TVs to facilitate public access to the archive
  • Provided 5 new DVDs of previously unseen fishing film footage for display in the museum
  • Worked on gathering oral histories of Hastings Fishermen
  • Began work on an education pack
  • Supported the Stade Guided Walks scheme
  • Played an active part in events throughout the year

The Shipwreck Museum

The Shipwreck Museum provides the opportunity to explore the wrecks of the Amsterdam and the Anne, enter the world of dinosaurs and handle real shipwreck treasure.

As part of the Stade Education Project in 2009 and 2010 the Shipwreck Museum:

  • Produced and distributed a Museum Leaflet
  • Purchased high visibility vests for Guided Walks to the Amsterdam shipwreck
  • Purchased and completed a Handling Box and trained staff to use it
  • Ordered branded sweat shirts for staff
  • Improved audio visual displays with two new flat screens, two DVD machines and converted old laser discs to DVD
  • Added sound and water effects to displays
  • Trained volunteers in cleaning artefacts
  • Improved signage outside the museum
  • Played an active part in events throughout the year

The Fishermen's Protection Society

The Fishermen's Protection Society is a friendly society which represents the fishermen and protects their ancient right to fish from Hastings' beach.

As part of the Stade Education Project in 2009 and 2010 the Fishermen's Protection Society:

  • Produced archive postcards
  • Provided crab dressing and net mending demonstrations for the public
  • Visited the cookery school at Webbes Fish Cafe in Rye to give a talk about MSC fish to a cookery class
  • Gave talks, guided walks and fish ID art classes to local school groups
  • Fishermen visited schools with fish to talk about the catch
  • School groups visiting the fishing beach have learnt about fish habitats from fishermen, their boats and fishing methods
  • Co-managed the Dancing with Dabs project
  • Played an active role in events throughout the year
