Hastings Borough Council is the lead partner on Answers to the Carbon Economy (ACE) project and led the bid for funding from the EU Interreg "2 Seas" programme which finances cooperative ventures between the Channel and North Sea coastal areas of southern England, northern France, Belgium and Netherlands.

Our successful bid led to a £430,000 grant which is being used to reduce our carbon footprint with a low-carbon refit of some council owned industrial units. The project also includes research on reducing the carbon footprint of Hastings' industrial estates overall through a variety of measures.

The ACE project runs until 2014 and we are working with partners in France and Belgium, with activities targeted to individual businesses, B2B and business park level. Ecopal (Dunkirk) recycles industrial waste for use as a raw material for other industries whilst WVI (Ostend) and City of Ghent are planning sustainable business parks with Ghent University providing specialist expertise.
