How to pay your Business Rates bill

Business Rates are usually paid by monthly instalments.  Details of the instalments due are shown on your bill.  However, if you prefer, you can pay the whole amount outstanding in one lump sum.  If you choose to do so, your payment should be made within 14 days of receiving your bill.

Some people like to pay their annual bill 'half-yearly' in two instalments.  This is acceptable, but two payments must be made by 1 April and 1 September.

Payment at a post office

Payment can be made at any Post Office counter.  Present your bill and either cash, cheque (made payable to 'Post Office Ltd') or debit card to make your payment and allow 5 working days for your payment to be received.

Payment by Direct Debit

Setting up a Direct Debit is one of the most popular ways to pay your bill, it means no more waiting in queues, writing cheques or worrying about finding the time to pay your bill.

Paying your bill by Direct Debit is easy, safe and once you've set it up you don't have to worry - your bank or building society will do the rest.  Direct Debit is the most cost effective way to pay, which means we can provide better services and facilities for local people.

We can offer our businesses the choice of paying their Non-Domestic Rates on the 1st, 15th or 23rd of the month by Direct Debit only.  The choice is yours!

If you want to pay by Direct Debit you can sign up over the phone on 01424 451081 and choose option 1 or download the direct debit form, complete it and send it back to us.

Payment by telephone

You can now pay your bill over the phone.

Our new convenient automated service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you can make your payment by phone at any time.

Please have your bill and debit card (Maestro, Visa, Visa Electron, and Solo) ready before you call.

Full details are explained by the automated service but if you experience any difficulties please contact us on the number shown on the front of your bill.

Online payments

You can pay your Business Rates through www.billpayment.co.uk using your Debit Card (Switch and Visa Delta).

If you wish to use this service, please follow the online registration process.  Please note that you will need to quote your Business Rates reference number which is shown on your Business Rates bill.

The BillPay service is provided by Girobank, and advanced levels of data encryption technology ensure that your sensitive banking details are transmitted in a secure and confidential way.

Payment by standing order

If you would still prefer to pay by standing order, you must give your Bank or Building Society the following information:

  • Your Business Rates Account Reference (shown on your bill)
  • Details of instalment amounts and the dates they are due (also shown on your bill).  Please remember to allow 5 working days for the payments to reach our account.

Please make cheques payable to 'Hastings Borough Council' and write the Account Reference shown on your bill on the back of the cheque. A receipt will not be issued.

Changes of address, discounts etc

Please remember that your bill assumes that your circumstances will remain the same for the whole of the financial year up to the end of March.  If you move, please let us know your new address.
