Open and Derelict Properties

The Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 empowers Local Authorities to deal with privately owned vacant buildings which are not secured against unauthorised entry or that are likely to become a danger to public health.

Our Environment and Safety team ensure that empty properties are kept secure and free from rubbish.  If you wish to report problems at a property please contact the Environmental Protection team.

If the property is adversely affecting adjacent properties then contact our Housing, Communities and Neighbourhoods team who may be able to help.

Similarly, if you are the owner of an open and derelict property and are interested in bringing it back into use, read our Empty Homes Strategy.

If the structure is considered dangerous, Hastings Borough Council has powers that enable it to deal with Dangerous Structures.
