East and West Hastings Academies

The proposal for two new academies in Hastings:

East Hastings Academy

  • would replace Hillcrest School
  • would be built on the Hillcrest site in Rye Road
  • would accomodate up to 900 boys and girls aged 11 to 16
  • would specialise in Information Communications Technology and English

West Hastings Academy

  • would replace the Grove and Filsham Valley schools
  • would be built on the Filsham Valley site in Edinburgh Road
  • would accomodate up to 1500 boys and girls aged 11 to 16
  • would specialise in Information Communications Technology and Mathematics

Both academies would be:

  • sponsored by University of Brighton, BT (British Telecom) and East Sussex County Council
  • opening in the existing three school buildings in September 2011
  • completed in September 2012
  • catering for students of all abilities, building on existing provision for students with special educational needs
  • offering a wide choice of courses and subjects plus greater learning opportunities through the sponsors and local partnerships
  • working with the local community and offer them access to new lifelong learning opportunities and recreational activities

Have your say about the East and West Hastings Academies

There will be two periods of 'consultation' where everybody can have their say about the East and West Hastings Academies.

First consultation about the East and West Hastings Academies

07 September to 16 October 2009

The University of Brighton, BT (British Telecom) and East Sussex County Council will be holding a number of meetings to discuss the plans:

Meetings aimed at parents and young people affected by the proposals

  • Monday 14 September: 6.30 - 8pm, Robsack Centre, Bodiam Drive, St Leonards
  • Wednesday 16 September: 6.30 - 8pm, Hillcrest School, Rye Road
  • Tuesday 29 September: 6.30 - 8pm, West St Leonards Community School, Harley Shute Road

Meeting aimed at everybody across Hastings who might be affected by or interested in the proposals

  • Wednesday 23 September: 7 - 8.30pm, Sussex Coast College, Archery Road

An opportunity to talk to the University of Brighton, BT (British Telecom) and East Sussex County Council directly about the proposals:

  • September 15: 5 - 8pm; September 17: 4 - 7pm, University Centre Hastings, Havelock Road

Second consultation about the East and West Hastings Academies

  • September 07 2009 to January 8 2010

East Sussex County Council will be broadly consulting about closing the existing schools, Filsham Valley, The Grove and Hillcrest, to make way for the academies.  The County Council will be circulating a leaflet and questionnaire about these plans.
