Now that election fever has died down again, we're back and looking forward to a glorious summer in Hastings. I'm sure you'll agree with me that the town looks great as the tourists flock in and hopefully take advantage of a strong Euro to enjoy some home grown holidaying.
This edition of About is a bit different. I, for one, became heartily sick of reading criticism from the national press about my town, calling it dangerous and racist. Of course we must not forget the terrible tragedy that surrounded the death of Mohammed al-Majed but I did not recognise some of the descriptions I read about the place I live and this has to be addressed.
Hastings & St Leonards is fighting back and I would like to introduce you to some groups who are at the forefront of bringing together a united town; a town where diversity and difference are celebrated and discussed, not hidden away and feared.
In this edition you will read stories from people who have lived in Hastings all their lives and you will hear from people who have recently settled here by the sea. Both bring something positive and a little bit different; both have every right to work and live happy and productive lives.
I hope you find this About an interesting and informative read. If you have any questions or comments, you'll find contact details at the bottom of the previous page. I wish you all the best for a great summer and hope you'll join me for the next edition of the magazine in September.
Councillor Peter Pragnell
Leader of Hastings Borough Council
