Regeneration News

Regeneration of The Marina Pavilion

Artists impression of Marina Pavilion Lightening Leisure Limited, together with partners Sea Space, have some really exciting plans for the much loved Marina Pavilion in St Leonards.

This historic building has undergone major refurbishment in order to offer the community a multi-complex venue for weddings, conferences, banquets and events, drawing interest from the local community and further afield.  Azur at the Marina Pavilion will also offer a beach front bistro, Mediterranean-style restaurant, and a unique health and beauty suite offering the latest technology and free weekly seminars for the public.

This venture will generate employment, training opportunities and services for the area and will be a much needed venue to help facilitate the growth and regeneration of the St Leonards area.

Azur's Chief Executive, David Thorpe-Tracey says:

"We are excited about making this venture a huge success, and keen to contribute positively to the regeneration of this wonderful area with jobs, increasing trade, building partnerships, and generating interest from other parts of the South East."

The Big Clean

Rubbish before and after clearing up Hastings Borough Council's Neighbourhood Renewal team led a month long town wide Big Clean Up operation during February.  In partnership with the 1066 Housing Association and our Environmental Services team, they cleared litter, fly tipping, overgrown vegetation and dog fouling at 123 separate addresses.

Some of the long-standing eyesores, which were the bane of local residents' lives, included the clearance of problem areas such as Castledown Terrace, St Mary's Road, Moorhurst Road and Swynford Drive.

Coastal Currents 2008: 29 August - 21 September

Poster for The Fair Maid of The West Coastal Currents returns to the streets, cafés, bars, parks and nooks and crannies of Hastings and St Leonards with an unusual mix of contemporary visual and performance arts. Highlights this year include:

  • A brand new theatre show from Third Party Productions (who brought us To Hell in a Handcart in 2004), 'Fair Maid of the West' will be staged at Hastings Castle.
  • The newly re-opened St Leonards Gardens presents more open-air theatre with 'Shakespeare in the Park' from Eyeline Productions.
  • Premiering this year is '1000 Revolutions' - a free show by Periplum Theatre Company, (their epic show 'The Bell' played to 3,000 people in Alexandra Park last year).  '1000 Revolutions' is an 'intimate spectacular' in which a trail of musical intrigue builds towards a live music celebration in the Town Centre.

On top of this will be street arts, live arts performances and, of course, the annual delight of the Open Studios.

Thirty-Six Hours are currently developing the programme and are eager to hear from local arts practitioners with ideas for events, exhibitions and cultural activities to join in the festival.  Coastal Currents needs friends (don't we all) but this year we are looking for individuals or families who would like to be associated with the 2008 festival.  Being a friend costs £10 and entitles you to reduced price tickets, invitations to event openings and other benefits.

For further details on the benefits of being a 'Friend of Coastal Currents' please call John Knowles on 01424 717464 or e-mail info@thirty-six-hours.co.uk
