A national charity has awarded Hastings Borough Council more than £150,000 to retell the fascinating story of the history of Hastings.
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) made the announcement earlier this year and the money will be spent on a Stade Heritage Education Project.
Sheena Vick, Heritage Lottery Fund Manager for the South East said;
"This award is fantastic news for East Sussex, illustrating our commitment to funding projects that make local history accessible to communities."
Up to six people will be trained up as volunteers and heritage guides in the area to promote the cultural heritage on their doorstep. Other partners in the project include the Shipwreck and Coastal Heritage Centre, the Fishermen's Museum and the Hastings Fishermen's Protection Society.
Local children will also be given the chance to find out more about their heritage including Hastings' famous fishing industry. A school pack and leaflet is on the cards alongside a whole host of learning and fun activities.
An education officer is due to be appointed to oversee the schools work.
Leader of Hastings Borough Council, councillor Peter Pragnell, said:
"The Stade is one of the most important and interesting parts of Hastings' rich history. This award will provide the resources to ensure that we can make the most of this heritage. The work of the volunteers and the education officer will allow visitors and young people to get the best from their visit to this fascinating part of town. I am very pleased with the award from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which will build on the work we are already doing in the Old Town and on The Stade."
