New Smoking Laws - five months on

Smokefree logo

Seems like only yesterday we were being told that smoking was to be banned in pubs, clubs, restaurants and other enclosed spaces.

There were, of course, a few teething problems but now all the debate and furore has died down most people seem to agree this legislation has been nothing but positive.  Gone are the days when going for a drink in the pub meant the smell of stale cigarette smoke in your clothes and hair.  Bar staff too can breathe easier knowing their working environments are no longer havens for passive smoking.

Four months on and according to the Department of Health of the 41,767 businesses inspected in the South East, some 98 per cent were complying with the smoke free laws.

This is great news for those who don't smoke but has proved a little inconvenient for those who still do.

Huddled outside pubs and restaurants under a brolly, smokers might feel they've been given a bit of a raw deal under these new laws.

Nevertheless smoking related litter does not appear to have increased hugely, with most business owners providing more bins and outside ashtrays, but our team of wardens has used its powers to issue Fixed Penalty Notices where appropriate.

The emphasis now turns to helping people give up once and for all.  If you fancy stubbing out once and for all, then get in touch with one of the specialists and you might never need to brave the elements for that nicotine fix ever again.
