Saturday, 26 January 2008, 11am, St Mary in the Castle, Hastings.

The annual Holocaust Memorial Day service in Hastings is part of a weekend of remembrance events taking place across the nation, marking the anniversary of the relief of Auschwitz by the Allies. It is always a very moving service with participation from all sections of the community. This year our service will feature a play, specially written by Lisa Porter and presented by Shades Theatre Company, on the remarkable life of 1066 Award holder, and Holocaust survivor Bruce Eton MBE, who died earlier this year.
For some 30 years Bruce was a consultant gynaecologist in Hastings and in retirement has done a huge amount for the local Jewish community, the Hastings Voluntary Blind Association and the musical life of our town. His numerous attempts to fulfil his dream to train as a doctor, while being pursued across Europe by the advancing Nazis, is an amazing story of courage and perseverance in the face of tremendous odds and a real inspiration to all. His whole aim in life was to help mankind, and his 1066 Award and MBE were well deserved. His life illustrates what an immense contribution one person can make, and is a poignant reminder of how much was lost in the deaths of the six million who did not survive.
The service is sponsored by Hastings Borough Council and coordinated by the Council of Christians and Jews, the Hastings and District Jewish Society and Christian Friends of Israel. Entrance is by advance ticket only, from the Hastings Information Centre. Tickets are free but in remembering the death and destruction of the Holocaust and the contrast of Bruce Eton's life, the congregation will be invited to make a donation for the local Special Care Baby Unit and to the Loaf Project, helping babies in Hastings, Sierra Leone.
