The aims of the Community Fruit and Veg Project (CFVP) are to increase the availability of fruit and vegetables in Hastings and Rother, to ensure that all produce is sold at affordable prices and to source locally grown fruit and vegetables whenever possible. Organisers want the project to make a real difference to shopping and eating habits by making it easier for local people to access affordable fresh produce wherever they live.
We achieve this by providing a number of different outlets and supply routes. These include having weekly volunteer-run stalls in community centres, delivering pre-bagged fruit and vegetables to sheltered housing schemes and children's centres and running a local veg box scheme that delivers to schools, workplaces and residential locations.
We want to make a long-term impact in the local area by providing a service that is sustainable rather than solely dependant on external funding. The project acts as a social enterprise and generates income from sales of fruit and vegetables and other activities in order to help cover its running costs. The project relies on the support of volunteers and so also provides training, work experience and other benefits for our volunteers, which include students with learning difficulties.
The CFVP has very good links with local producers as it also runs the farmers' market and it aims to source locally grown fruit and vegetables whenever possible, in order to provide environmental benefits as well as helping local communities.
