Current estimates suggest that landfill sites, like our own at Pebsham will run out in less than ten years.
We have to throw less away and recycle more and we have to do it now.
Starting in the Autumn, we're going to an alternate weekly rubbish and recycling collection system with twin, 240 litre wheeled bins - one green bin for recyclables (paper, cans, recycling and card) and one grey bin for everything else. Some households will not be able to be part of the scheme and you will receive specific information about your arrangements in due course.
These will be collected on alternate weeks and there will also be the opportunity to buy special brown wheeled bins, solely for garden refuse.
You will get more information about the Twin Bin scheme towards the end of June, but for now please visit the Recycling pages for more information.
Why are you introducing the Twin Bin Scheme?
There's growing environmental and social pressure on all of us to reduce the amount of rubbish we produce and increase the amount we recycle.
There's also strong evidence that twin bin schemes increase recycling and therefore help everybody. The twin bins will also easily withstand the seagull attacks that have been such a problem in the past.
Most landfill sites, including our own Pebsham facility, will be exhausted in the next ten years so we have to do something now. The Government is setting tough recycling targets and we need to work together to achieve these.
After I get my bins in September, where do I put them when collections start in October?
By 7am on collection day, you'll need to move the relevant bin to where your property meets the pavement of the road used by our collection vehicle.
The bin will be be collected and emptied from inside your open and unobstructed gate as long as the bin itself is within 1 metre (3 feet) of the road and is clearly visible.
After we've emptied the bin you should return it to the storage point on your property as soon as possible.
Can you help me move my bins?
If, due to illness, disability or infirmity, you'll need help moving your bin please email twinbin@hastings.gov.uk or 0845 274 1077.
Is everyone going to be on the scheme?
Some 75% of the town's properties will be included but an anticipated 25% (mostly parts of the Old Town and the centres of Hastings and St Leonards) are unsuitable for wheeled bins. If you're worried about the suitability of your property, email twinbin@hastings.gov.uk or 0845 274 1077.
Will all the 'bring sites' still be available?
Yes! Remember that the green wheeled bins can only take the materials listed. The 'bring sites' can take all of these things together with glass and, through charity collections, items like clothing. Get the locations of these sites at www.hastings.gov.uk/recycle.
What happens on Bank Holidays?
Your collection stays the same. The only days on which you won't get a normal collection are Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Always check the local press, www.hastings.gov.uk/recycle or the information we send you nearer the time.
What if my bin is not collected?
Please report it within 48 hours of your collection day and we'll deal with it as promptly as possible. You can email us on twinbin@hastings.gov.uk or call us on 0845 274 1077.
