Gettin' Active Page

Forget fad diets and the latest exercise tricks - make a date with the Ladies Gettin' Active (LGA) team for a real difference.

Make new friends, keep fit and take part in a variety of healthy activities for a healthy lifestyle without the boredom of the gym.

The LGA team knows that the fear of joining a new group can make it difficult to sign up to new activities, which is why we've worked hard to make sure all the sessions are as fun as possible with professional, friendly staff.

Exercise and diet are key factors in good health and studies tell us taking part in 30 minutes of exercise on most days can help stave off stress, disease and boost confidence as well as weight loss.

So, if you're a lady who wants to get active, why not throw caution to the wind and try your hand at either trampolining, netball, swimming, street dance or even a seaside social walk.  Who cares if you haven't done any sport since you left school - these activities are for you!  It's all about letting your hair down and having some fun.

You don't have to have the latest trainers or pay a joining fee;  in fact most of our sessions are free!  You just have to pick up a bottle of water and come and join the team.

Never too old to Get Active!

Enjoy your retirement with the Active Hastings team.  Why sit around the house all day, when you could be out enjoying yourself with new and old friends?  Active Hastings provides a fantastic post retirement programme, with activities to suit everyone, regardless of age or mobility.

Sport England statistics show that only seven per cent of people over the age of 50 in Hastings are taking part in the recommended amount of physical activity to benefit their health.  All the current research suggests that, through participating in physical activity, older people can improve their independence and quality of life.  Physical activity, which includes walking, gardening and housework, as well as sport or deliberate exercise, can significantly reduce your risks of a number of illnesses including coronary heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity and osteoporosis.  And, just as importantly, it is a great opportunity to have fun and socialise.

The Active Hastings post-retirement programme includes gardening groups, croquet, bowls, dancing, walks, tai chi and chair based exercise among other activities.  It doesn't matter if you haven't done any exercise in years.  The friendly Active Hastings team will ensure that you find an activity that you can enjoy.

For full details on all the Active Hastings sessions, pick up a copy of the Active Hastings Programme from the Hastings Information Centre, or call 0845 274 1050 for your copy.

It's too late now.
By Digger Brodrick from the Active Hastings Team

Looking out the window, staring at the rain
Wondered where my life had gone, running down the drain
Thought of all the chances, lost or disappeared
Things I could and should have done, but left - too late I fear.

But is it?  Too late I mean.  Is all the time now gone?
I still can get about a bit, not everything is wrong
Some bits of me are past their best, and pain me now and then
Most days though I mope about, the telly's my best friend

Don't see many people living how I do
Even going down the shop I rarely meet a few
Family say get out a bit, go on - enjoy your time
Seems like too much effort, even when the weather's fine

Looking out the window, see joggers running by
Parents walking with their kids, kites flying in the sky
Realise that life's still there, waiting to be had
And even if am more slow, not everything is bad

I plan to make an effort, but where to begin?
Not for me the jogging, but something easy to get me in
Looking in the paper, gives me an idea
Let's see what Active Hastings has, to get me into gear.

Wait a tick, just what's the rush, I can't just go off now
Lots of things on telly, and in truth I know not how
To join a group, get moving, meet other folks and such
It's just too late really, too late and too much fuss

Or is it?  Too late I mean, too late to have some fun!
Too late to try to smile and find, that still I've time to run
Got some hours left on my clock, People still to meet
Get this sofa off my back, help me to my feet!!

Let's do it - now, before it really is too late.
