This year the focus of the Holocaust Memorial Day Service in Hastings will be on the children who hid from the Nazis, and will include contributions from local schools. Under Nazi occupation Jewish children were not allowed to attend school, and the burning of what were considered subversive books was commonplace.
Poet Heinrich Heine said:
"Where they have burned books, they will end in burning human beings."
Which sadly proved true.
In memory of this enforced intellectual darkness and mass murder, those who wish will have opportunity during the service to donate religious books in good condition. Through Book Aid, these will be used to assist students in developing countries who often also lack access to books.
The service, which is part of the national Holocaust Memorial Day events, will be on Saturday, 27 January at St Mary in the Castle, and is arranged by the Council of Christians and Jews, The Hastings and District Jewish Society and Christian Friends of Israel, with the support of Hastings Borough Council.
Admission is by advance ticket only, obtainable from Hastings Information Centre.
