Ear, Ear

Poster with black background and 4 coloured ears More than 200 budding politicians answered a call to join Hastings Young Persons' Council following a recent poster campaign.  The posters featured a set of ears, each belonging to an important decision maker, with the simple slogan 'We have their ears'.

Twenty-one of these young people have decided to become 'active' members and will serve as youth councillors for the next 12 months.  They will bend the ears of local councillors and other decision makers to make sure young people have their say in the future of the town.  The current chair of the council said:

"All of the changes that are being made are going to affect us as young people, for far longer than the people who are making those decisions.  It's only right that we have a say in how money is spent in the town, considering that most of us don't even have the right to vote."

Besides these 'active' councillors, there are 180 members between the ages of 13 and 21, who want their views to be heard by decision makers.  Youth councillors will keep these members up to date and give them every opportunity to have their say.

If you are under 21 and are fed up with opportunities available to you, then why not join up!

"We want as many young people as possible across the town to get in touch with us and join in.  The more people that join, the more power we will have to influence the future direction of the town and make sure that Hastings & St Leonards is a place that young people want to live, study and work in for a long time to come."
