Young people lead the way

Hastings Young Persons Council is a growing band of young people that have a passionate interest in making sure they are at the heart of plans for the future of Hastings & St Leonards.

Referred to as simply the ‘Youth Council’, the group was set up nine years ago to ensure everyone aged between 13 and 25 could have their say on how millions of pounds was spent in the regeneration of the town. The youth council is run by young people, for young people.

They get to meet local politicians and other top decision makers on a regular basis and are currently campaigning to get a youth building in the town centre with top class facilities.

Anyone can join but you have to:

  • Be aged between 13 and 25
  • Live, work or study in Hastings & St Leonards
  • Have lots of ideas and opinions
  • Find out what others think as well
  • Be able to speak to top decision makers, politicians and local councillors to tell them what you think
  • Be able to attend meetings at least once a week
  • Be prepared to spend extra time outside meetings gathering opinions and following up ideas
  • Be organised as you will have to run meetings, set agendas and make plans

There are several special interest groups in the council for those with a passion for technology, ecology and regeneration, social issues, sports and leisure, arts and culture, under 18s or publicity.

If you have a genuine interest in influencing the decisions made in the town and want to be involved with a dynamic, creative and exciting group of young people with a growing local and national reputation then please see www.youngpersonscouncil.co.uk or contact hypc-info@hastings.gov.uk 01424 451492 or 451395.

Fill in our on line survey before 1 November and you could win a snazzy new PSP player or a mobile phone.
