Parking attendants are top of the class

The latest batch of NVQ-qualified parking attendants has received their certificates.

Hastings Borough Council became one of the first local authorities in the South to be approved by City & Guilds as an NVQ centre for a qualification in parking control.

Already six parking attendants have completed their NVQs and a further ten are signed up and on their way to completion.

The NVQ is a work-related, competence-based qualification. Candidates must prove they have a high level of competence in all aspects of their job and are assessed through training and observation.

NVQs are divided up into modules and each one is signed off by the assessor as they are completed.

Parking attendants can complete the NVQ in-house with our internal verifier and three assessors, to guide candidates through.

Councillor John Wilson, lead member for Environment and Safety, said:

"We are committed to providing a high standard of service and this is a great achievement for us. All our parking attendants are encouraged to take up the qualification and we hope that very soon they will all be qualified to NVQ standard."

Earlier this year our parking attendants got together with the Quality Bus Partnership, of which the council is a member, to sort out drivers leaving cars in bus lanes and at bus stops.

Our parking attendants can regularly be seen hopping on buses and travelling the route, ready to deal with inconsiderate drivers.

Anyone obstructing buses could find themselves with a £60 fine.

Cllr Wilson said:

"One of the priorities for parking attendants is to be visible on the primary bus routes, both on foot and mobile patrol. This acts as a deterrent to drivers from parking on bus stop clearways or indeed on yellow lines, which has a positive impact on both road safety and the free flow of traffic."
