Hastings’ Mayor Councillor Maureen Charlesworth joined more than 300 guests and young people at the De La Warr Pavilion in July to celebrate the end of the first year of activity by Creative Partnerships, Hastings and East Sussex.
Creative Partnerships is an ambitious, national programme that develops young people’s creativity and aspirations through long-term partnerships between schools and the creative and cultural sector. Schools and their creative partners explore how creative learning can animate classes, inspire teachers and connect with parents ad wider communities.
More than 160 young people and teachers from 16 schools have been involved, along with an Early Years programme and participants from a Pupil Referral Unit.
Guests visited stands representing the different schools and took part in workshops led by the young people and their creative partners.
One of the highlights of the celebration was a huge, flamboyant postcard installation in the shape of a butterfly. Artist Angie Biltcliffe worked with a team of children to lead guests in creating the installation.
Paul Collard, National Director for Creative Partnerships, said:
"It was very exciting to see the enormous strides that the young people and schools involved in Creative Partnerships Hastings and East Sussex have made in one short year. They presented a fascinating selection of the projects they had completed. Some were internally focussed and reflective, such as the group of young people who had made an honest and moving film about the challenges facing their school. Others externally, such as the school radio station that was connecting its young people with the world. All showed a commitment and ambition to bring about real change in their lives, their schools and in their communities, which augurs well for the future. I am convinced that these energetic and imaginative young people will now not only succeed in school, but raise the standards and aspirations of those around them."
Since April 2005 almost 4,000 children have taken part in a project developed by Creative Partnerships, Hastings and East Sussex.
Creative Partnerships, Hastings and East Sussex is confirmed to run until March 2008, benefiting from funding of £2.5 million.
