Wheelchair users now have full access to Hastings beach and the sea, thanks to a unique buggy.
Hastings Borough Council is believed to be the first local authority in the country to import the floating buggies, called Tiralos, from France.
The yellow, lightweight Tiralo allows wheelchair users and people with restricted mobility to get a tow straight into the water or across the beach.
The Council now has two at a cost of £800 each and has received the full support of the Hastings and Rother Disability Forum.
Kevin Towner, vice chair of the forum, tested the buggies out when the BBC came down to film them in action over the summer.
Despite the less than favourable weather, the buggy was towed down to the water’s edge by one of our lifeguards and made the lunchtime and evening news.
Tiralos are used across Europe, but we think we are the only resort in the UK to have them.
A Council spokesman said:
"We imported these buggies after one of our officers came across them in France and saw how popular they were and how much difference they made in terms of access to the beach and sea. We found a company in Glasgow that shipped them over and now we have two ready and waiting."
"The great thing about them is that they allow wheelchair users to have just as much access to our fantastic beach as people who aren’t restricted by a physical disability. The fact they go in the sea as well is a real bonus."
"Tiralos are free to use on the beach and £2 for a half hour session in the sea with one of our lifeguards. More information is available from one of beach attendants or lifeguards stationed at the hut opposite Pelham Place."
