Tressell Training - Making wood work

Tressell Training has been busy notching up achievements this year with very successful courses and an award-winning learner.

Three local students have mastered a new skill, renovating two benches for a community park. Jason, Darren and Michael completed a six-week carpentry course organised by the Council’s Tressell Training unit. The programme gave them the essential woodwork skills necessary to repair the seats, which are now featured in Hughenden Road Pocket Park.

The Project Manager at Tressell Training, said:

"It is fantastic to see the results of Jason, Michael and Darren’s talent and commitment. These benches are clearly very well renovated, and are testament to the hard work of these young men and all the staff who helped along the way. I hope the seats will be enjoyed by residents in the Pocket Park and that our trainees will continue to enjoy carpentry and make the most of their new skills."

Another Tressell trainee making a big impression was Andrew, who picked up a Learner Achievement Award at a prestigious ceremony organised by learning consortium FE Sussex.

Andrew had difficulties in school and had been in trouble with the police, but turned his life around, enrolling and successfully completing a six-month motor vehicle course.

He picked up a trophy, certificate and a cheque for £100.

Andrew said:

"I am delighted to win this award and feel very proud of my achievements. I completed the Motorvation course after walking away from the project at first. I then passed exams to get into college and am now doing well on the construction course. I am far more confident and no longer in trouble with the police, I am also much better behaved on the streets and at home."

Councillor Matthew Lock, lead member for Regeneration and Planning, said:

"Tressell Training has provided so many young people with a positive future and its successes are well deserved. My congratulations go to Jason, Darren, Michael and Andrew for all they’ve achieved."

Tressell Training provides learning opportunities for young people who, for one reason or another, are not suited to a full-time traditional school curriculum. The team offers practical courses focusing on employability and vocational skills. The team also provides the e2e programme for 16 to 18 year olds.
