May Day revellers weren’t put off by a little morning rain at the start of this year’s Jack-in-the-Green procession. Spectators gathered to watch Jack, the giants, the bogeys and the sweeps dance along the seafront and through the old town in traditional quirky style.
Morris men and women from across the country descend on Hastings for the bank holiday spectacular, which attracts thousands of visitors each year. Jack-in-the-Green is a fantastic display of eccentricity and the unique traditions that draw visitors to Hastings year after year. Once the procession has been led up to the castle, crowds are treated to an afternoon of Morris dancing and music. The spirit of summer is released in a dramatic finale when the Jack is slain and his leafy remains are tossed into the crowd. As if by magic, this year, the weather looked up in the afternoon and the sun came out just as the spirit of summer was released.
Along with the bogeys and the Morris men, the town was filled with around 20,000 bikers on the annual May Day run from Kent and other places in South East. Whether you prefer bikes or bells there was something for everyone on May Day 2006.
