Culture, on show, by the sea

31 August - 30 September throughout Hastings and St Leonards

Coastal Currents arts festival 2006

Coastal Currents returns in September with an unashamedly arty line up. We have live arts performances, street theatre, celebratory arts and exhibitions alongside open studios, films and live literature. This year we have big names from the world of international fine art – The Chapman Brothers rubbing shoulders with students from their old college Hastings College of Arts and Technology. We have the internationally respected and critically acclaimed theatre company Wildworks performing a site specific piece called ‘Souterain’, which features many local performers and artists and we have a brand new commission for Radiator Arts and Renegade Pyrotechnics which, fingers crossed, will be the first Coastal Currents live performance to take place on the land and sea. In fact this year will be a good one for spotting the extraordinary within the ordinary as artists and performers pop up all over the town creating enigmatic installations within the urban landscape.

Personal highlights for me will be the beautiful and powerful arrival of Rajni Shahs four hour performance piece ‘Mr Quiver’, here as part of Fresh @ Coastal Currents, the opportunity to see Billy Childish live at St Mary’s as part of a day long celebration of spoken word and the myriad of exhibitions by local artists, which every year prove that this is without doubt a rare and special place to live and work in.

This year’s festival is being managed by Thirty-Six Hours Ltd and newly established social enterprise, on behalf of Hastings Borough Council
