Ever wondered what cartoon character your local councillor would like to be? Or if they think a Jaffa Cake is in fact a biscuit? Members of Hastings Young Persons Council (HYPC) gave politicians a real grilling at an evening of political speed dating earlier this year.
Like the romantic version, HYPC members had three minutes to date a councillor, asking them taxing and not so taxing questions. At the end of the evening each politician was marked out of ten on their approachability and the answers they gave.
Topics ranged from public transport to votes at 16. Each councillor was asked what one thing they would change about the town they represent and of course the infamous cartoon character question.
The Chair of the HYPC said:
"This was a very successful and fun evening. It was also a chance for us to raise topics with counillors that don't always get raised at these meetings."
The HYPC has been busy during the last couple of months recruiting new members and electing a new committee, including a new chairperson. Currently they are planning for the year ahead, working in sub-groups around the following topics: arts, social issues, sports, under 18s and publicity. Once plans are underway you'll be able to see what's going on at www.youngpersonscouncil.co.uk which is currently being updated.
Please feel free to comment on anything that the HYPC is doing and make suggestions for future plans.
