Switch on to decorative lighting

Looking on the brighter side of life in the Old Town

Butlers Gap decorative lighting schemeYou may have noticed that certain areas of our town are looking a bit brighter lately thanks to our Decorative Lighting Strategy.  The latest target for illumination was the Old Town, where Butler's Gap and Swan Gardens were lit up.

Lighting schemes are designed for specific buildings and locations that will benefit from having their best features highlighted.  The White Rock Theatre was lit in October, showing off the dramatic Spanish Colonial style of the building.  Next in the spotlight was the Royal Victoria Hotel, one of the most attractive buildings on our seafront.  The switch on took place in early January at a ceremony attended by the Korean ambassador.  The Old Town schemes were installed only last month to draw attention to two of the most historic and interesting places in the Old Town.  To complete the project lights will also be added to the Old Town Hall Museum and George Street in the coming months.

Council leader Jeremy Birch said:

"The strategy is all about showing off our best features and enhancing the appeal of our town after dark.  Already some of our most appealing architecture is standing out, as a shining example that our town is on the up."
