Flood

How we coped when the waters came in

CCTV frame of flooded town centreChaos ruled Hastings Town Centre when it was flooded last month, almost five years to the day from the last serious flood.

More than 50 shops were thought to have been affected as water surged up from below street level.  In the Town Hall the Marketing and Communications section was the worst affected with water rising to more than three feet in the low-lying areas.  Staff worked to clear offices of desks and paperwork, to let the water subside and carpets dry out.

The Council courier's car was another victim of the water, with levels rising to its headlights.  Shop staff worked to get businesses up and running as soon as possible as firefighters used specialist pumping equipment to get rid of the last dregs.  At the time of going to press Southern Water was still investigating the cause.
