We would like to hear your views on whether to trial cycling in the town centre. Pedestrian areas of the town centre are currently out-of-bounds for cyclists but Hastings Urban Bikes (HUB) has raised a petition to remove this restriction for a 14-month trial period.
The petition asked that we consider allowing cyclists to use town centre areas to give them safer access to the shopping area and the station, avoiding busy roads like Albert Road and Harold Place. It would also allow a National Cycle Network route to be signed through the town centre linking with the seafront.
Recent studies carried out by the Department for Transport show that in general cyclists tend to slow down and take more care in pedestrian areas, the majority of pedestrians were not concerned for their safety with cyclists around and that other things like the layout of an area can affect pedestrian safety and comfort.
We would like to know what you think.
