Cliff works rock

A cliff-edge look at the stabilisation works

Work on the cliffsAdventurous contractors have been hard at work above Hastings making the cliffs safer.  These cliff edge pictures show the specialist work well underway as the team abseiled the cliffs behind Pelham Crescent and above Rock-a-Nore Road.

Ritchies were the specialist team to take on the work, which began at the end of November and was completed at the end of February.  Serious erosion made the stabilisation works necessary to prevent rock falls behind properties in Pelham Crescent and Rock-a-Nore Road.  Rock falls are unfortunately, not unknown from the soft sandstone cliffs.  In a detailed survey carried out last year the possibility of further falls was identified, making the works crucial.

While on the cliff face, the 18-strong team removed and disposed of 35 cubic metres of rock, carried out masonry and brickwork repairs, as well as inspecting and testing existing rock and brickwork.

In addition, a permanent fence 85m by 3m high was erected along the cliff face.  A highly qualified mountaineer was part of the team to secure the safety of the contractors at all times.
