Big Bluey on the prowl

How a large blue ashtray is helping to keep Hastings clean

Big Bluey and Wardens

Litterbugs were the targets when Big Bluey hit Hastings.  The bright blue, giant portable ashtray roamed the streets targeting people who dropped cigarette butts and empty cigarette packets.  As well as handing out almost 2,000 portable ashtrays, Big Bluey warned litterbugs that dropping butts could land them a £50 Fixed Penalty Notice.

On a positive note anyone seen disposing of their litter properly, was told they could win themselves a meal for two at The Italian Way restaurant through a special prize draw.

Councillor Godfrey Daniel, portfolio holder for the Environment said:

"The majority of smokers probably don't think of themselves as litterbugs but we know that discarded cigarette butts account for a lot of the rubbish picked up off the streets and they harm our environment.  We are committed to keeping Hastings and St Leonards clean and in doing our bit to improve the environment.
"Our wardens have recently taken on new powers which mean they can issue Fixed Penalty Notices to anyone seen dropping litter or letting their dog foul the streets."

The campaign against dropping cigarette butts is part of a national drive by Encams, formerly the Keep Britain Tidy group.
