Leaders Introduction

Jeremy Birch - leader of the Council

As another New Year beckons, we all draw up the balance sheet on the old year while looking forward to further progress in the 12 months to come. I believe in 2006 our town will see many of the major regeneration projects move from designs on paper to concrete (and wood, glass and brick) reality.

The first of the 700 Millennium Community homes in Ore Valley will be finished and occupied next year. The doors will open at the refurbished and redeveloped Marina Pavilion and on the newly built innovation centre at Churchfields in 2006. Work will soon start on the major Station Plaza redevelopment.

The expansion of Priory Meadow shopping centre will be carried out bringing trading on to the first floor. A dramatic addition to the decorative lighting scheme will be installed uplighting the pier and another will illuminate the Old Town.

New multi-use games areas will be built and will be in use for our young people, a newly equipped Falaise fitness centre will re-open after its makeover and the town’s Museum and Art Gallery will complete its substantial extension.

The purpose of all this intense activity is to improve the economic fortunes and the quality of life for local people. And one thing is for sure next year, About will be keeping us all up to date with how well things are progressing.

I hope 2006 is a good year for all our readers as well as for the borough of Hastings and St Leonards.
